The Inland Empire's last goat dairy farmer faces a precarious future Los Angeles Times

Of course, they abscond when they are truly unhappy, but there are ways to get them to stay put. I say this because this nucleus hive is made of polystyrene. This build allows you to make additional boxes that are sturdy and durable, depending on your needs.

Horizontal Beehive: A Comprehensive Guide

The smaller number of frames means your supers are smaller and lighter. So rather than a full super weighing 60 pounds, the eight frame supers only weigh 30 pounds. If you plan to move your hive boxes, the smaller frame count can save your back. Here are seven types of beehives to keep your busy bees safe and sound.

Common Types of Beehives

beehive design

In 1852, Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth patented a design for a moveable-frame honey beehive. Today, variations on the Langstroth design are still the standard for professional and hobbyist beekeepers throughout the world. Their preservation from the elements is of major concern of beekeepers in many parts of the world. However, hives have also been  made out of many alternative materials, including concrete. A ventilated bottom board and entrance reducer round out Bill’s  description.

Warre Hive Pros and Cons

Take note of the length and width, as well as the desired height of the roof. Ventilation is crucial for the well-being of the bees inside the hive. To provide adequate airflow, it is important to add ventilation holes to the beehive box. These holes allow fresh air to circulate and prevent the buildup of moisture, which can lead to mold or disease. Using a drill or a small saw, carefully create ventilation holes on the sides or the top of the box, ensuring they are evenly spaced.

Frames

Black Hills has touted a plan to make renewable energy and storage nearly half of its power capacity by 2030. She said the company needs a game plan for shutting down Neil Simpson II and, eventually, the Wygen plants. Instead, the company will update the plant to run on both fuels. It definitely means keeping climate and air quality in mind at the ballot box, from presidential elections to local races.

Hive Defense: The Intricate World of Protecting the Colony

As mentioned before, top bars were created to disturb less of the hive all at once. He actually creates handles and then screws them into the boxes. But you are given full instructions on how to build these hives which could potentially save you a lot of money.

Easy DIY Beehive

It’s important to seal any potential entry points for rain or pests to maintain the integrity of the hive. A tight and secure roof will help to protect the bees and their comb from unwanted moisture and intruders. One of the benefits of the Warre Hive is its simplicity. Beekeepers can observe and manage the hive without needing to disrupt the bees as much. Additionally, the continuous stacking of boxes creates a warm and insulated environment for the bees, reducing the need for additional insulation during colder months. To apply the paint or stain, you’ll need a set of brushes in various sizes.

One of the most significant benefits of horizontal hives is the elimination of heavy lifting. Traditional Langstroth hives, when filled, can weigh upwards of 80 pounds, making them cumbersome to manage. In contrast, horizontal hives remain stationary, with only individual frames needing lifting. This feature makes them an attractive option for those who might struggle with lifting heavier boxes. In a horizontal hive, bees are given the freedom to build their comb naturally.

Measuring and Cutting the Roof Panels

However, the exact frequency can vary based on the hive type and the beekeeper’s experience. While Langstroth hives can be expanded vertically by adding boxes, horizontal hives are confined to a single box. This limitation can restrict the amount of honey harvested. While horizontal hives offer many benefits, they are not without their challenges. One of the main differences between horizontal and vertical hives is the space utilization.

This is actually a really cool feature because so many woods now days contain pesticides. If you want to raise organic bees or raise an organic garden then you will be interested in this recipe. That is pretty cool to be able to keep bees in as much of a natural set-up as possible.

The shingling of the panels is visible both on the interior and the exterior of the structure. Panel widths – both glass and metal – vary as a function of the curvature of the pipe beams. The more pronounced the curve, the smaller the panel module. Adding ant-proof features like a moat on the base also helps. And the height of the beehive stand should be proportional to the weight of the hives. As the name implies, making this beehive is straightforward.

This keeps the bottom board dry and helps to insulate the hive. Bill has decided to use frames without beeswax foundation, although he has included some some with a starter strip at the top to guide construction. Beeswax foundation has  acquired a reputation from  some beekeepers as being contaminated with pesticides due to Varroa  mite treatments. Now DWP is hurrying to finish building a plant next door that will run primarily on gas, but with the capability to mix in up to 30% hydrogen at startup in mid-2025.

Langstroth Movable Frame Hive

Each hive becomes a one-of-a-kind piece, showcasing the resourcefulness and ingenuity of the beekeeper. Furthermore, upcycled hives can be more cost-effective compared to purchasing new materials, making beekeeping more accessible to individuals on a budget. Another approach to bee hive design involves the use of upcycled materials. By repurposing materials that would otherwise end up in landfills, beekeepers can reduce waste and contribute to a circular economy. Upcycled hives can be constructed from a variety of materials, such as reclaimed wood, recycled plastic, or even repurposed household items. They are particularly beneficial for beekeepers who rely on technology for hive management, as they eliminate the need for batteries or grid power.

Cutting the Wood Panels

This hive works well and doesn’t bother the bees as much (3). Speaking of transferring bees, where do you put a new package of bees? Well, you can just build this plan and move the whole box inside, no problem. The setup has everything your bees need to feel at home, including a feeder. If you don’t want to transfer bees from a swarm trap, then capture them straight into a hive.

Hive Stand

Additionally, rooftops provide a safe and secluded environment for the bees, away from potential disturbances and predators. Beekeepers who use observation hives often find them to be valuable tools for learning and teaching. They allow for a hands-on experience that can stimulate curiosity and foster a deeper understanding of the complex social structure and behaviors of bees. Observation hives also serve as a reminder of the importance of honey bees and the vital role they play in pollination and ecological balance.

Installing the Beehive Entrance

It will give the bees a place to colonize and give them a reason to hang around your property. Even if you have an urban homestead with a rustic décor, this hive would fit in perfectly. However, this option is even better because you can have brand new ones in a less expensive way by building them yourself.

Horizontal beehives are typically constructed using wood, though other materials can also be used. The design consists of a long, horizontal box with removable frames. These frames allow the bees to build their comb and store honey. A critical aspect of the design is ensuring proper ventilation to prevent moisture buildup. The horizontal beehive is a revolutionary approach to beekeeping that emphasizes the natural behavior of bees.

The stepping seats surround a triangulated, pyramidal skylight that brings light to the conference, reception, and open stair way areas. A French beekeeper named Emile Warre spent 50 years designing the “People’s Hive,” or as it is often called the Warre Hive. Since Langstroth hives are so popular and come in modular layouts, you can easily source brand-new replacement parts should you ever want to expand your hive or do repairs. The Langstroth is well-respected as a hive offering the potential for a good deal of honey.

An open-source plan for a top bar beehive, this project would be suited well to those looking for pollination. This beehive cabinet is made from wood scraps, so any cost or waste is minimal. It’s in the Langstroth style and is fine for the beginner beekeeper.

beehive design

The size of the hive should be proportional to the number of bees in the colony. Just stack them together, build a roof and an entrance, and you’ll have a one of a kind beehive in no time and for practically no money. Since the configuration depends on the location and purpose of the bees, you may not start off with all the boxes you need. Additional boxes are added below the brood boxes, allowing the bees to draw comb downward like they naturally do.

Beekeeping equipment should be built to a closer standard. Manual extraction involves removing the frames from the honey supers and uncapping the honeycomb cells using a hot knife or uncapping fork. Once uncapped, the frames are placed in a honey extractor, which uses centrifugal force to spin the honey out of the comb.

Using a screened bottom board has also proved effective in keeping down Varroa mite numbers by allowing the mites to fall through the screen and out of the hives. The Dadant Screen IPM Board has an additional removable monitoring screen for checking Varroa levels of a hive. The Apis Information Resource Center website seeks to promote beekeeping through a wide range of topics that are of interest to both the beginner and advanced beekeeper.

A beehive stand should be high enough that predators can’t get to it. But it should also not be too high that you have a hard time maintaining it. It’s not the prettiest stand out there, but it does the job at almost no expense. Building this hive stand is as easy as stacking two cinder blocks on opposite ends and then inserting two posts through the slots to form a bridge. This beehive stand version uses old skids to save on expenses, but it works to give you just as much honey. Free bees sound fantastic, but it’s easier to imagine than to do it.

There is a Youtube video and pictures to go along with written plans. If you are interested in a top bar hive then this could be it. This top bar hive is pretty similar to the other ones mentioned. However, I will say that these plans might be a little more detailed. This site has pretty much every part of a hive that you will ever need. It is really cool because you can just scroll through the pictures to figure out what you need.

The next step in building the beehive box is installing frames and foundation. Frames provide support for the bees’ comb and foundation sheets serve as the base for the bees to build their honeycomb. Start by inserting the frames into the designated slots inside the box. Make sure they are aligned properly and securely in place. Then, carefully attach the foundation sheets to the frames using wire or embedding techniques, ensuring they are centered and secure. Most beekeepers in the U.S. keep bees in a standard, sometimes called “Langstroth” hive.

An innovative beehive option, this DIY beehive project starts with a pine board with holes cut into it to accommodate 6 to 8 Mason jars. A plus is that you can see the bees at work inside the jars. Dating back to the 1948 book “Beekeeping for All,” this plan will keep a beginning to intermediate woodworker busy as a bee. This beehive is a good option for beekeepers — from beginners to experienced veterans. This Langstroth option includes ten frames your bees can call home. It’s a good option for intermediate beekeepers and woodworkers.

Man missing after falling overboard on Carnival cruise ship near Florida

man falls overboard cruise ship

A Carnival cruise ship passenger fell overboard into the Gulf of Mexico and was found alive against all odds on Thanksgiving Day — more than 15 hours after vanishing, officials said Friday. The cruise ship was released by the Coast Guard from search and rescue efforts and will continue its way to Norfolk, Virginia, where it's scheduled to arrive Tuesday. The US Coast Guard said it will resume its search at first light on Friday morning local time, for a Brisbane man who went overboard from a cruise ship off Hawaii on Wednesday night. The father of the 20-year-old passenger who jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship last Thursday in a reportedly drunken, impulsive leap believes his son is still alive nearly a week later. At least 10 other people have fallen overboard from cruise ships this year, Business Insider previously reported.

Francel Parker, dad of missing Levion Parker, told the Daily Sun that he believes his child — whom he called a master diver — is still alive in the waters off the Bahamas. Authorities say the man who recently disappeared from a Carnival cruise ship appeared to have jumped overboard. In a post on X, the Coast Guard said it suspended its efforts on Monday, after an eight-hour search that covered more than 1,625 square miles.

"We even witnessed staff when, we were in Tahiti [earlier], practising retrievals in the water," she said. "We looked out of the window up on the deck and [saw] a lot of life preservers … the big rings were getting thrown overboard, at least eight or nine of those got thrown overboard. "All the staff just dropped everything and ran to every possible vantage point on the ship," Mr Hardy said. "At about 11pm, midnight, we observed the vessel slowing down and turning around on our maps. "There was a lot of commotion on the boat. It all started at about 9pm," she told ABC North West. As of Dec. 24, Royal Caribbean has not provided further information on the incident, citing privacy for the passenger and his family.

"Out of privacy for the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share," they added. According to the US Coast Guard, the ship was 127 miles east of Charleston, South Carolina, when the incident occurred.

"There were a lot of announcements, telling us that the ship was being turned around, most people could feel the ship had changed course, it was a bit bumpy in the water. "To be real, for me personally it was very surreal and quite sad. It was quite confronting, we were all out trying to spot anything to help the staff. "They requested all guests return to their cabins and account for all their members and if someone was missing, to call 911 on our emergency systems here if we were missing a passenger. “There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately,” Deborah Morrison told The Post. Bryan Sims told The Post that he was hanging out with Levion and his 18-year-old brother, Seth, in the hotel tub of the ship in the early hours of April 4 before they went their separate ways. The younger Parker allegedly jumped off the 18-story Liberty of the Seas around 4 a.m.

"The next thing I know... I regained consciousness. I was in the water with no boat in sight," he said. His rescuers believe he was moments away from perishing in the water given the hypothermia, shock and dehydration he was suffering from. As he was treading the choppy waters during his nearly 20-hour ordeal, Grimes recalled being approached by a huge creature he initially thought was a shark. Rukavina said crew were “frantically” trying to get the lights on the lifeboats to work. “We went onto our balcony and saw the searchlights and were sort of sitting there praying and hoping he’d be found,” one woman said. Huge swells overnight made conditions “near impossible” to find Tollemache, the coast guard said. With the combination of the 16-storey fall, exhaustion, dehydration and hyperthermia, “the chances of survival are very, very small”, survival expert and physiologist professor Michael Tipton told 7NEWS. The Honolulu Command Centre has confirmed that the person missing is an Australian man, but provided no further details. "The staff were all out on safety posts, there was not a space or inch on the boat where there wasn't a staff member shining a torch in the water."

In front of his helpless dad and younger brother after getting into an argument with his father, witnesses previously told The Post. "We have informed the U.S. Coast Guard and are providing assistance to the guest’s family that was traveling with him," they added. The ship has the capacity to carry 2,500 passengers, and features a rock-climbing wall, outdoor movie screen, and swimming pools. According to CruiseMapper, which tracks the locations of thousands of cruises around the world, the Vision of the Seas ship is currently traveling around the Bahamas. “He realistically could have been in the water for 15-plus hours before we were able to successfully rescue him,” Gross said. The ship departed Baltimore on Friday and made its first stop in Orlando on Sunday, arriving in the Bimini Islands on Christmas Day, according to the cruise itinerary.

Quantum of the Seas departed Brisbane, Australia, on April 12 and is scheduled to arrive in Honolulu on Friday. The man was rushed to a hospital in New Orleans and was being evaluated, officials said. Ms. White pictured the unknown passenger alone in the water and felt sick to her stomach. The eight-day roundtrip was themed "Christmas," according to the cruise line's website.

Coast has been notified and is currently searching the sea for the crew member. "I instantly felt sick to my stomach knowing that one of our fellow travelers had been lost at sea," he told the newspaper. The ship was reportedly travelling from Hamburg in Germany to Rotterdam in the Netherlands. A helicopter, a Coastguard aircraft and lifeboats were involved in the operation. "We are beyond grateful that this case ended with a positive outcome," said Lt. Seth Gross, a Coast Guard Sector New Orleans search-and-rescue mission coordinator.

The sibling didn’t report her brother gone until noon the next day,  prompting the Cozumel, Mexico-bound ship to retrace its sailing path toward New Orleans Thursday, Carnival spokesperson Matt Lupoli told the outlet. The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a 41-year-old man who went overboard on a cruise ship just before Christmas, it said Monday. Grimes had only been aboard the Carnival Valor for a day before his sister reported him missing. The two were last seen together at a restaurant where Grimes had won an air guitar contest before going to the bathroom. The man was a passenger on the Carnival Magic cruise ship, which was about 186 miles east of Jacksonville when he fell into the water.

The sprawling cruise ship has 16 decks and fits 4,905 guests and 1,500 crew members, according to its website. “I think it kind of blows the norm, the normalcy, out of the water here, and really just shows the will to live is something that you need to account for in every search-and-rescue case,” he told CNN. Carnival Valor had said in a statement to ABC News that it conducted a search-and-rescue operation after Grimes went missing. “Cruise ships have safety barriers in all public areas that are regulated by US Coast Guard standards that prevent a guest from falling off,” the agency said in a statement.

Coast Guard crews searched more than 1,625 square miles over eight hours, according to the Coast Guard in Charleston. Grimes said he treaded water for nearly 20 hours after falling overboard on Thanksgiving Eve -- battling jelly fish, rip currents and shark-infested waters before being airlifted by the U.S. It still isn’t clear how Grimes ended up overboard, but the US Coast Guard appeared to suggest he may have breached the cruise ship’s safety barriers. He doesn’t recall how he fell overboard, insisting the last thing he remembers was winning an air-guitar contest in one of the ship’s lounges. CBS Miami reported the Mardi Gras is the largest ship ever built for the cruise line. The Coast Guard responded with two cutters and an airplane to search for the 43-year-old man.

Saturday, when an announcement saying “Oscar, Oscar, Oscar, Starboard” was made over the ship’s loudspeakers, passenger Colin Schappi told NBC News affiliate WCBD in Charleston. "Out of privacy for the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share," said a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean. The Coast Guard is using air and water assets to search for the passenger.

Two more stops are planned in the Bahamas before it returns to Maryland. The Vision of the Seas was 127 miles east of Charleston, South Carolina, on Saturday night when the incident occurred, the Coast Guard posted on X. "The Carnival Care Team is providing support to the guest’s companion and traveling party who are on board," Carnival said. “The fall didn’t kill me, sea creatures didn’t eat me — I felt like I was meant to get out of there,” Grimes said. Grimes was eventually spotted by a cargo ship, and dramatic video showed him being plucked from the ocean by the Coast Guard about 20 miles south of Louisiana’s Southwest Pass. His disappearance prompted the Cozumel, Mexico-bound vessel to retrace its path toward New Orleans and the US Coast Guard to launch a frantic search.

On Facebook, Mason said she and her family are in need of prayers as they await answers. “We are holding on to hope and prayer that he will be found safe,” she wrote. Barnett’s mother Elisha Reid told Business Insider that her daughter was previously informed that there was no footage of what happened. "He was the life of the party. It just hurts too much to even type, let alone talk about it," Blosser said.

“The Coast Guard has made the difficult decision to suspend the active search for the passenger aboard the Quantum of the Seas,” search and rescue mission co-ordinator Kevin Cooper said on Friday. Brisbane man Warwick Tollemache, 35, fell overboard from the Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas ship in the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday night, sparking a major air and sea search. So far, crews have searched more than 200 miles of water for the missing passenger, according to the agency. The Coast Guard said in a tweet that crews were searching for a passenger who went overboard off the Carnival Magic vessel around 186 miles east of Jacksonville, Florida.

A 35-year-old man aboard a Carnival Cruise ship fell overboard Monday off the Florida coast, according to U.S. LA FAYETTE, ALABAMA -- James Michael Grimes is speaking out for the first time in an exclusive interview with ABC News after going overboard on a Carnival cruise ship after being missing for almost 20 hours. Lupoli said the Coast Guard released the ship from the search efforts and it continued to Port Canaveral. A 35-year-old man is missing after falling from a cruise ship off the coast of Florida, authorities said. Another passenger Ken told 7NEWS.com.au he and his wife were awake at the time of the incident, and saw the lifeboats and search lights being used.

The Coast Guard said Monday that it has since called off its search for the missing person. After six hours the crew returned to the air station for fuel replenishment. The crew member was on board the German AIDAperla cruise ship when he went overboard in the early morning of 22 October. The passenger, according to the Coast Guard, turned out to be James Grimes, 28, who had been traveling with his parents and siblings on the five-day cruise.

Quantum of the Seas is on a 16-night cruise that departed Brisbane on April 12 and is set to conclude in Honolulu on April 28, local time. In a speech addressing passengers on Thursday morning, the captain said his “deepest sympathies and thoughts” were with the man’s family. "While on its trans-Pacific sailing, a guest onboard Quantum of the Seas went overboard," the spokesperson said. Royal Caribbean said it “immediately” launched search boats to look for the 20-year-old and alerted the Coast Guard, which later took over the search.

"The Jayhawk aircrew hoisted the man onto the helicopter and transferred him to awaiting emergency medical services at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport," a statement from the Coast Guard read. The ship was on its way to Cozumel, a Mexican island in the Caribbean, and was released by the Coast Guard to continue to its destination after the rescue was made. The 28-year-old man said he was determined to make it out of the Gulf of Mexico alive, calling it the experience of a lifetime. The man jumped from the Carnival Cruise Line ship Mardi Gras just after midnight about 55 miles east of Port Canaveral, according to the Coast Guard and Carnival. The cruise company has now confirmed a woman died from a medical episode just hours before Tollemache went overboard.
